Chhau Festival
Chhau Festival
The inaugural edition of the Chhau Festival 2025 will be a landmark event celebrating the three distinct Chhau dance traditions—Seraikela, Kharsawan, and Manbhum (similar to Purulia Chhau). Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, Chhau dance combines martial arts, storytelling, and intricate masks, providing a captivating insight into India’s artistic heritage. This three-day cultural event at the Nimdih Gandhi Ashram will immerse participants in the rich traditions of Chhau through workshops, performances, and interactive sessions. Renowned experts will conduct dance and mask-making workshops, allowing attendees to engage with these living art forms.
The festival will feature workshops on all three Chhau dance styles, mask-making, and instrument playing, as well as panel discussions with specialists on the cultural significance of Chhau. Evening performances will showcase stunning displays of Seraikela, Kharsawan, and Manbhum Chhau. The schedule includes workshops, an instrument-playing session, inauguration, and performances on 28 March; dance and mask-making workshops, a panel discussion, and performances on 29 March; and intensive workshops and grand concluding performances on 30 March. This historic inaugural edition offers an invaluable opportunity for students, artists, and cultural enthusiasts to engage with a living heritage.
