The inaugural edition of the annual Jaisalmer Folk and Handicraft Festival in 2022 showcased the living heritage of the district, which housed generations of Manganiyar folk musicians as well as makers of the traditional string instrument known as the kamaicha. The festival also threw the spotlight on crafts such as the red clay pottery of Pokaran, and folk arts like the string puppetry of Jaisalmer, performances of which narrate tales of kings and war heroes.
A cultural presentation of Rajasthan folk music and dance were staged on both days of the festival, from 5 pm to 7 pm. The performers included surmandal player Chanan Khan; kamaicha players Dare Khan, Firoz Khan and Ghewar Khan; and Kalbelia dancer Asha Sapera.
The Jaisalmer Folk and Handicraft Festival is an opportunity for visitors to learn about the history of the district and interact with their practitioners. It is part of a collaborative initiative of the Department of Tourism, Government of Rajasthan and UNESCO to strengthen the intangible cultural heritage of western Rajasthan.
