About Indian Institute for Human Settlements

The Indian Institute for Human Settlements, founded in 2009, is a national education, research and practice institution committed to the equitable, sustainable and efficient transformation of Indian settlements. It has offices in Bengaluru, Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Mumbai and New Delhi. Academics and Research, Practice, Urban Practitioners, and Digital Blended Learning are its four key programmes. Additionally, the Indian Institute for Human Settlements has four cross-cutting Labs: Word, Media, Urban Informatics, and Geospatial. It houses a public reference library as well.

Through its Research programme, the institute undertakes research across several disciplinary clusters. As part of its Practice programme, it provides advisory services to national and state governments; public, parastatal and municipal agencies; international development agencies; and private firms at the interface of human settlements and urbanisation.

The teaching programmes bear a unique focus on practice in Indian cities and are taught by a dynamic group of internal faculty and academic and professional advisors. The Labs curate and host public events and festivals to help increase public engagement with conversations around the city and the research being done at the institute. The annual writings festival City Scripts is curated by the Word Lab and the annual film festival Urban Lens is curated by the Media Lab. Monthly film screenings and conversations with authors are also part of the institute’s public programming.
