Prithvi Theatre
Mumbai's most-beloved suburban theatre venue
About Prithvi Theatre
Prithvi Theatre is a subsidiary of the Shri Prithviraj Kapoor Memorial Trust and Research Foundation. The trust was set up in 1975 in memory of actor Prithviraj Kapoor, to promote and develop professional theatre, in Hindi primarily, by providing and managing a well-equipped venue at very reasonable costs, with all the technical facilities. Its other aims were to subsidise and promote aspiring and deserving stage artists, technicians and researchers; to host and conduct workshops; to provide rehearsal and workshop spaces; to create a theatre resource centre and research library; and to provide medical and educational assistance to theatre workers and their children.
Its flagship event is the annual Prithvi Theatre Festival. Special programmes include a yearly memorial concert, designed by tabla player Zakir Hussain, and the Summertime at Prithvi series of plays and workshops for children. It runs a number of programmes in association with other organisations, such as the Chai and Why science-related talks held in partnership with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and screenings of French cinema run in collaboration with Alliance Francaise de Bombay.
