For four days in November, the mountain town of Dharamshala is abuzz with filmmakers and film lovers from across India and the world. They come together for Dharamshala International Film Festival, a joyous celebration of independent cinema.
Started in 2012 by long-term residents and filmmakers Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam, the festival’s mission is to encourage the local Himalayan communities to engage with contemporary cinema and art from around the world and initiate conversations and practices that enable the production and circulation of local cinemas in the region.
The Dharamshala International Film Festival aims to work towards building a local paradigm for responding and expressing through the languages of cinema. Each edition showcases contemporary features and documentaries, shorts, animations and experimental films and features talks and masterclasses.
Adil Hussain, Afia Nathaniel, Asif Kapadia, Chaitanya Tamhane, Deepak Rauniyar, Dibakar Banerjee, Geetu Mohandas, Juhi Chaturvedi, Kazuhiro Soda, Manoj Bajpayee, Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Shrihari Sathe and Varun Grover are among the actors, filmmakers and screenwriters who have been part of the event. As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Festival was held online in 2020 and 2021. The 2022 edition of the festival screened movies like Adh Chanani Raat (2022), Neptune Frost (2021), Dharti Latar Re Horo (2022), Dhuin (2022) and many others.
The upcoming edition of the festival will be held between 07 and 10 November 2024.

- Users may face interruptions during the course of the live stream due to internet connectivity issues. Neither Festivals From India nor the Festival Organiser is responsible for such interruptions.
- The Digital Festival / Event may have interactive elements and will involve participation from the Users.
