Sastrika – A Unit of Performing Arts
An organisation that puts folk traditions and artists to the forefront.
About Sastrika - A Unit of Performing Arts
Sastrika was formed in Kolkata in 2015 to popularise experimentation in performing arts forms such as dance, music and theatre and put lesser-known folk traditions and artists to the forefront. The organisation believes that the performing arts are not just a medium of joyful and creative expression. They also bring about awareness of one’s own self and one’s larger environment, and help in fighting widespread social injustice.
During the past seven years, Sastrika has presented performances in the small towns and villages of West Bengal, Delhi, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Kerala and Maharashtra. It has showcased such Indian and international classical and folk dance and martial art forms as bharatnatyam, chhau, ghumar, Kabui Naga, kathak, kathakali, kalaripayattu, legong, Manipuri, Odisi, topeng, thang-ta. Among its many projects are the Body and Lens international Screen(ing) Dance Festival and Seminar.
